Indian Affairs Committee Continues Lobbying Inquiry

Washington, D.C. — Today in executive session the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs took additional steps in its ongoing review of lobbying matters and authorized Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, the Chairman of the Committee, to issue subpoenas to various persons and entities involved in the inquiry.

“The Committee’s oversight responsibilities are not just over legislation affecting Indian tribes and their members but over allegations of improprieties, wrongdoing, and misconduct that affects them”, said Campbell (R-CO), an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana.

Beginning in March 2004, the Committee has reviewed allegations involving four Indian tribes, their lobbyists and consultants, and other parties.

“These charges, if proven to be true, are very grave, and warrant the most serious review”, said Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-HI), Vice Chairman of the Committee.

After reviewing the information sought by the subpoenas, Campbell said he expects the Committee to conduct an oversight hearing.

“This is an ongoing review and the Committee will be reviewing information we have and information we will be getting so that we can fulfill our oversight role”, said Campbell.
