WASHINGTON — Wednesday, July 12, at 12:30 p.m. MT / 2:30 p.m. ET, U.S. Senator Tom Udall, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, will join Committee Chairman John Hoeven (R-N.D.) in leading a legislative hearing to review three bills affecting Indian Country. The committee will hear testimony from several witnesses, including Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) Director Tony Dearman. Udall will question Dearman on working together with the BIE and local communities to ensure Native student support programs, like Johnson-O’Malley, reach all eligible students. Udall will also press Dearman on how the administration’s proposed workforce reduction, ongoing vacancies, and personnel shuffles are affecting BIE’s mission.
During the legislative hearing, the committee will hear testimony on the following bills:
S. 943, Johnson-O’Malley Supplemental Indian Education Program Modernization Act
S. 1223, A bill to repeal the Klamath Tribe Judgment Fund Act
S. 1285, A bill to allow the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians to lease or transfer certain lands.
