Senate Committee on Indian Affairs to Hold Hearing on Housing Reauthorization Bill and Two Tribal Land Bills

WASHINGTON D.C. –
On Wednesday, July 31 at 2:30 PM, Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will chair a U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs legislative hearing on three bills:
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Land Transfer Act (S.235);
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Non-Intercourse Act of 2013 (S.920); and
Reauthorization of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self- Determination Act of 1996 (S. 1352).
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) Land Transfer Act (S. 235), introduced by Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Mark Begich (D-AK), would provide for the conveyance of Indian Health Service property located in Anchorage to the ANTHC. The federal property is already in use in connection with Alaska Native health and related programs in Anchorage. With the transfer ANTHC will be able to move forward with its plan to build a home away from home for patients and families receiving treatment in Anchorage.
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Non-Intercourse Act of 2013 (S.920), introduced by Senators Al Franken (D-MN) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), would allow the Band and Carlton County, Minnesota to implement an agreement they have for an exchange of land.
The Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act was enacted in 1996 and consolidated multiple federal housing programs, to enable Tribes or Tribally designated housing entities to provide affordable housing for low income families residing on reservations and tribal areas. The Reauthorization bill (S. 1352) was introduced last week by Chairwoman Cantwell and Senator Barrasso with the support of Senators Tim Johnson (D-SD), Jon Tester (D-MT), Tom Udall (D-NM), Mark Begich (D-AK), Al Franken (D-MN), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). The Act is set to expire in September of this year.
