U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, will hold an oversight hearing Thursday, October 13, 2011, on The Carcieri Crisis: The Ripple Effect on Jobs, Economic Development and Public Safety in Indian Country.
The purpose of this hearing is to examine the effects of Carcieri v. Salazar on tribal communities in the two years since the United States Supreme Court’s decision. Tribal leaders and other experts say that the uncertainty created by the Carcieri decision makes it more difficult for tribes to create jobs on reservations and in surrounding communities and to attract Native business development opportunities. The Carcieri decision has also led to an increase in litigation which diverts tribal resources from needed programs and has created potentially dangerous public safety concerns resulting from jurisdictional uncertainty regarding the status of tribal lands.
