Senate Approves Dorgan Resolution Recognizing November as National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month

WASHINGTON D.C. –
A resolution introduced by U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, which recognizes November as “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month” has been approved by the U.S. Senate.
The resolution, S. Res. 689 has 15 bi-partisan co-sponsors.
It recognizes the month of November as a time for special recognition and celebration of the many Native American contributions to the United States. “Native Americans were an important influence on our country’s founding fathers and how they structured our government,” Dorgan said. “They have continuously served in our Armed Forces at higher numbers per capita than any other group. Native Americans, using their Native languages, developed an unbreakable military code that helped defeat the Axis powers in World War II. These remarkable tribes and individual Native Americans have shaped our nation’s history in so many meaningful ways.
“I hope all Americans take the time to learn more about the rich culture and history of the First Americans and the many contributions they have made to make our country stronger.”
Earlier this month, President Obama also officially proclaimed November to be National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, which Presidents have done every year since 1994.
