Chairman of Senate Indian Affairs Committee to Conduct Listening Session at Gila River Indian Reservation

Washington DC –

U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, will conduct a public listening session on the subject of Indian education at the Gila River Indian Reservation in Chandler, Arizona on Tuesday, February 16. The 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM session will take place at the Shelby Building, 5718 West North Loop Road, in Chandler.

The session will focus on Indian education issues, as the committee prepares to consider legislation reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and its application in Indian Country.

Dorgan said he is “seeking recommendations for how Congress can better address the education needs of Indian students either in existing education programs or through new legislative initiatives.” The session is an effort to ensure that Native American “priorities for improving educational opportunities for Indian students are part of the discussions surrounding national educational reform,” Dorgan added.
