WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, welcomed the full Senate’s passage of S. 995, the Spokane Tribe of Indians of the Spokane Reservation Equitable Compensation Act.
“This legislation provides the Spokane Tribe with compensation that will be used for the economic development; infrastructure development; and educational, health, recreational, and social welfare objectives of the Tribe,” Hoeven said. “I look forward to this legislation passing the House of Representatives and moving to the president’s desk.”
S. 995 establishes the Spokane Tribe of Indians Recovery Trust Fund to compensate the Spokane Business Council for the use of tribal lands for the generation of hydropower from the Grand Coulee Dam.
The bill was introduced on May 1, 2017 by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA). It passed the Senate on October 4, 2018. It will now go to the House of Representatives.
