WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and Senator James Lankford (R-OK) praised the Senate’s passage of H.R. 487, a bill to allow the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma to lease or transfer certain lands. The bill was introduced by Representative Markwayne Mullin (R-OK).
The House of Representatives passed H.R. 487 on Sept. 16, 2015. The bill will now go to the president for his signature.
“This bill promotes tribal self-determination by empowering the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma to more easily lease or transfer their non-trust tribal lands,” said Chairman Barrasso. “Congress has acted quickly to pass it and I look forward to the president signing it into law soon.”
“I want to thank Chairman Barrasso and my colleagues in the Senate for getting this bill through the Senate so quickly,” said Senator Lankford. “This legislation is important because it removes an unnecessary federal barrier for the Tribe so they can conduct their affairs as they see fit.”
