WASHINGTON D.C. –
Chairman Byron L. Dorgan (D-ND) sent a letter to tribal leaders on Wednesday hailing the passage of the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010. The Act has been sent to the President who will sign it into law on Thursday, July 29 at a White House signing ceremony. Dorgan got the bill passed in the Senate on June 23, 2010. In the House, it was included as part of H.R. 725, the Indian Arts and Crafts bill, which was approved last Wednesday on a 326-92 vote.
The legislation aims to improve all aspects of the justice system on American Indian reservations and clear up jurisdictional confusion among tribal, state and local law enforcement officials, which often gridlocks effective law enforcement in Indian Country.
