SCHATZ CALLS FOR HEARING ON LUMBEE TRIBE RECOGNITION
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, released the following statement on a bill to extend federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
“The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Recognition Act deserves a full and fair hearing before the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs,” said Chairman Schatz. “Congress’ constitutional authority to recognize Indian Tribes must be exercised with due diligence, and the first step is a legislative hearing.”
