Senate Committee on Indian Affairs to Hold Oversight Hearing on The Department of The Interior’s Land Buy-Back Program For Tribal Nations

WASHINGTON D.C. – On Wednesday, December 11 at 2:00 PM, Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will hold a U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs oversight hearing on the impact of the Department of the Interior’s Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations.  This will be preceded by a hearing on the nomination of Vincent Logan to be Special Trustee for American Indians.

 

The buy-back program was established as part of the historic Cobell v. Salazar settlement agreement, which was ratified by Congress through the Claims Resolution Act of 2010.  The agreement provided $3.4 billion dollars to resolve claims of trust asset mismanagement by the Department of the Interior.

 

The hearing is comprised of witnesses from the Administration and Tribal leaders. 

 

The Committee will hear from the Mr. Lawrence Roberts, Deputy Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, U. S. Department of the Interior, Washington, DC.

 

The Committee will also hear testimony from leaders of the Makah Tribe, Neah Bay, WA; Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Reservation, Poplar, MT; and the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council.

 

The hearing will take place in Room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, and will be available online at indian.senate.gov
