TOMORROW: Udall to Push for Increased Funding for Indian Health Service at Hearing on IHS Budget, Deliver Keynote Address at Event on Indian Economic Development

WASHINGTON — Tomorrow, U.S. Senator Tom Udall, ranking Democrat on the Senate Interior appropriations subcommittee will push for increased funding and improved Indian health care services at a hearing about the Indian Health Service (IHS) budget. Udall will question IHS officials about the impact that congressional Republicans’ plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and reduce Medicaid funding would have on IHS patients’ access to care. Udall will also urge increased funding to address the IHS facility construction backlog and for greater access to mental health and substance abuse programs in Indian Country.
 
Later, Udall will give the keynote address at “Indian Nations Rising: Celebrating Native Youth,” an event hosted by The Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development. Udall will speak on the importance of empowering Native American youth and discuss his work to fight for cultural, political, and economic sovereignty for all of Indian Country.
  
Then, in the evening, Udall will speak at the annual Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation Native American Congressional Internship reception. The Udall Foundation was established by Congress to increase congressional internship opportunities for Native American youth. The foundation is named after Udall’s uncle and father.
 
Thursday, Udall will urge funding for New Mexico’s military bases and VA facilities during a hearing on the fiscal year 2018 budget for military construction and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
