WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, praised Congress’ passage of H.R. 812, the Indian Trust Asset Reform Act. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Michael Simpson (R-ID-2), with bipartisan support. The bill passed the House of Representatives on Feb. 24, 2016.
The bill is the same as S. 383, which passed the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on July 29, 2015 and was sponsored by Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID).
“Today, Congress passed legislation that will empower tribes to better manage their own trust assets,” said Chairman Barrasso. “It is our obligation to guarantee that Indian trust assets benefit tribal citizens. I am pleased that this bill has passed the full Congress and I encourage the president to sign it into law.”
