WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven (R-ND), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, today held an oversight hearing on “From Languages to Homelands: Advancing Tribal Self-Governance and Cultural Sovereignty for Future Generations,” which included testimony from tribal leaders and tribal organizations.
“During the 116th Congress, the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has worked in a bipartisan manner to advance priorities important for tribal communities. Despite the challenges of this year, the Committee has continued to convene meetings and move legislation to improve the lives of Native Americans, including passing a number of bills that have been signed into law, as well as advancing additional legislation that we are in the process of passing through the Senate. That includes provisions to promote tribal sovereignty and economic development in Native American communities, improve public safety and to help with health care needs,” said Hoeven.
In addition, Chairman Hoeven recognized Vice Chairman Tom Udall, who is retiring at the end of the Congress, for his dedication and leadership on resolving issues affecting Indian country, and wished him well.
